The Senate's health care bill is an ungodly mess of errors, loopholes, and massive giveaways. When the American people find out what's actually in this bill, they will revolt. Congress and President Obama have no choice but to do better for health care than this bill. / Photo via afagen (flickr)

Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) Slaps the Face of Democrats Who Want Real Health Care Reform

Bernie Sanders (I-VT)

Last night, Americans who care about real health care reform were treated to an early Christmas gift.

The ten Democratic members of the United States Senate who were tasked by Democratic Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid (D-NV), to kill a public option while he sat in a corner, curled up, shaking and hugging his knees, have in fact scuttled the last vestige of real health care reform.

And the weak, pathetic, immoral, failed Democratic Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid, unable to live up to his title of Leader, has embraced the horror.

As we reflect on how quickly the five supposedly liberal senators who participated in the rapid negotiation to kill a public option folded like cheap lawn chairs, let’s not forget to ask ourselves why Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), was not even asked to join this gang of ten.

Senator Sanders has acknowledged that “the overwhelming majority of Americans want to be able to choose between a strong public option and a private insurance plan” and correctly points out that “without that competition, there is very little in this bill that would keep health insurance premiums from escalating rapidly.”

There were five supposedly liberal senators and there were five so-called “moderate” senators, but Sanders was not allowed into the room.

By not allowing Senator Bernie Sanders to participate in this closed-door discussion, Senator Harry Reid slapped the face of every Democrat across the United States who supports real health care reform and who believes that the creation of a public option was a minimum requisite for the reform to be real.

Let no one forget that Senator Harry Reid led the way in killing a public health insurance option.

And while real reform was being thrown out with the trash, Obama sent out this email last night asking for money to help reform health care:

Subject: We will not back down
    Date: 12/8/2009 6:31:10 P.M. Eastern Standard Time
    From: info@barackobama.com

“As we head into the final stretch on health reform, big insurance company lobbyists and their partisan allies hope that their relentless attacks and millions of dollars can intimidate us into accepting the status quo.

“So I have a message for them, from all of us: Not this time. We have come too far. We will not turn back. We will not back down.

“But do not doubt — the opponents of reform will not rest. So I need you, the members of Organizing for America, to fight alongside me.

“We must continue to build out our campaign — to spread the facts on the air and on the ground, and to bring in more volunteers and train them to join the fight. I urgently need your help to keep Organizing for America’s 50-state movement for reform going strong.

“Please donate $5 or whatever you can afford today:

    “Let’s win this together,

    “President Barack Obama”

    How shameless.

Obama is asking for money from people who can’t afford to give it, asking them to trust him to help them, asking them to put all their hopes in him, at the very same time that he’s letting them all down.

Reid’s downfall next year will be a huge statement of dissatisfaction with Obama’s failure to lead on health care reform.

    Dear Senator Sanders,

Please join republicans and stop this from coming to an up-or-down vote.

Don’t do it because they disrespected you by shutting you out of the discussion when they ruined health care reform.

Do it because they slapped us all in the face by shutting you out of the discussion.

Oppose it from coming to an up-or-down vote for us!

Let no one forget that Senator Harry Reid led the way in killing a public health insurance option.

Let no one forget that Reid failed to lead. period. Obama failed to lead.

Where are the leaders in the Democratic Party? Why are progressives in congress folding?
